How Zigbee Works

Zigbee is a low-power mesh network protocol. Bulbs communicate with a hub, not your router.

  • Mesh network: Bulbs relay signals to each other, extending range
  • Local control: Commands processed by hub, no cloud needed
  • Low power: Uses less energy than WiFi

How WiFi Works

WiFi Network Concerns

Each WiFi bulb is a device on your network. Problems emerge with many bulbs:

  • Router limits: Consumer routers handle 20-50 devices before issues
  • IP addresses: Many IoT devices can exhaust DHCP pool
  • 2.4GHz only: Most smart devices use 2.4GHz band, adding congestion

If you have 20+ smart home devices: Consider Zigbee or dedicated IoT network.

What About Thread/Matter?

Thread is a newer protocol addressing these concerns:

  • No cloud required
