Check Compatibility
Use each brand’s compatibility checker:

Check Your Wires
Turn off HVAC power, remove your current thermostat cover, and photograph the wires. Count how many you have and note
where each connects.
C-Wire Check
Look for a wire on the “C” terminal. If you don’t have one:
- Nest Thermostat (E): Works without C-Wire
- Sensi: Works without C-Wire
- Ecobee: Includes Power Extender Kit (PEK) adapter
Tools Needed
- Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead)
- Drill (optional, for new screw holes)
- Level
- Phone or camera (to photograph wiring)
- Masking tape and marker (to label wires)
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Switch off your HVAC system at the circuit breaker. This is critical for safety.
Step 2: Remove Old Thermostat
- Pull off the thermostat cover/faceplate
- Photograph the wiring—which wire connects to which terminal
- Label each wire with tape (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.)
