Navigation: LiDAR vs VSLAM
The biggest technical difference is navigation technology:
Roborock: LiDAR
LiDAR uses a spinning laser to create precise room maps. It works in complete darkness and creates accurate maps from
the first run.
Roomba: VSLAM (Camera)
Visual SLAM uses cameras to see and navigate. Needs some ambient light. The j7’s camera enables excellent obstacle
detection (cords, pet waste, shoes).
| Aspect | LiDAR (Roborock) | VSLAM (Roomba) |
|---|---|---|
| Dark rooms | Yes | No |
| Obstacle avoidance | Good | Excellent |
| Mapping speed | One run | Multiple runs |
Suction Power
Roborock wins on raw suction:
- Roborock S8 Pro Ultra: 6,000 Pa
- Roborock Q7 Max: 4,200 Pa
- Roomba j7: ~2,200 Pa
Higher suction means better deep carpet cleaning. However, Roomba’s rubber extractors are excellent at grabbing pet
hair despite lower suction.
Mopping
Roborock: Most models include mopping built-in. Premium models have auto-mop washing and lifting.
Roomba: No mopping on vacuum models. iRobot sells separate Braava mopping robots that can coordinate
with Roomba.
If you want vacuuming AND mopping in one, Roborock is the clear winner.
