LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) uses a spinning laser sensor on top of the vacuum. It measures distances to walls

Obstacle Avoidance
Camera-based systems have an advantage here. The Roomba j7’s camera can identify and avoid:

LiDAR can detect that something is there, but can’t identify what it is. Some LiDAR robots add cameras specifically
