What is a C-Wire?
The C-Wire (Common Wire) provides continuous 24V power to your thermostat. Old thermostats didn’t need constant
power—they just switched circuits on/off. Smart thermostats run displays, WiFi, and sensors that need power 24/7.
Thermostat Wire Colors

Note: Wire colors aren’t standardized! Always check where wires connect at the furnace/air handler,
not just the color.
How to Check If You Have a C-Wire
- Turn off HVAC power at breaker
- Remove old thermostat cover
- Look at wires connected to terminals
- Check for wire on “C” terminal
Possible Scenarios:
- Wire on C terminal: You have a C-wire! ✅
- No wire on C, but extra wire in wall: May have C-wire not connected
- Only 4 wires (R, W, Y, G): No C-wire ❌
- 2 wires only: Heat-only system, no C-wire ❌

Solutions If You Don’t Have a C-Wire
Option 1: Buy a Thermostat That Doesn’t Need One

Option 2: Use the Ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK)

What Happens Without C-Wire?
When thermostats “power steal” without proper C-wire:

- Furnace short-cycling (turning on/off rapidly)
- Failed firmware updates
Some systems work fine without C-wire; others don’t. If you experience issues, adding a C-wire adapter usually fixes
them.
